About the Company
We launched Palmas del Mundo in January of 2009 to create and market stylish, environmentally friendly, 21st-century beach architecture and roofing supplies for upscale beachfront properties and individuals. Our goal is to create a perfect harmony of design innovation, luxury and manufacturing quality. Palmas del Mundo grew out of our two existing family-owned businesses, Palmex International and Cabanas del Mundo. We found that we could do a better job of serving customers by eliminating the barriers between our shade structures business and our thatch roofing materials business. But that’s not the whole story.
My Personal Story I am blessed to have been born and raised in the glorious resort destination of Aruba. Like most Arubans, I spent hundreds of hours on Aruba’s tourist beaches. And I spent about half that time moving my heavy, awkward lounge chair into the shade of an old-fashioned beach umbrella. But unlike most Arubans, my family was in the hotel business when I was growing up. From an early age, I was taught that a beachfront property’s most valuable asset was the real estate between the hotel pool and the water’s edge. And I grew to understand that a hotel manager’s priority was to monetize every square meter of beachfront…because the beach is what his guests are paying for.
Ultra-Modern Hotels…with Stone-Age Beaches As the years went by, I realized that there was a disconnect between the gleaming, modern architecture of the beachfront resort hotels, and the tiki-style palm shelters they installed on their beaches. Hotels and resorts with all the latest amenities were still using stone-age construction techniques and materials!
And there was a disconnect between the upscale, pampered experience that guests enjoyed inside the hotel, and their experience with the rather primitive shade structures on the beach. If you’ve paid several hundred dollars a night for a luxury room, why should you have to put up with moldy, decaying palm thatch that attracts insects, mice, snakes and other pests? Why should you have to drag a heavy, awkward lounge chair through the sand so you can enjoy the shade?
What’s more, these resort beachfronts all looked quite similar. Traditional beach architecture construction techniques and materials ensure that a palm thatch sun shade in Aruba looks just like a palm thatch sun shade in Rio or Tahiti or Maui or Miami Beach. So it’s difficult for boutique or upscale properties to create a unique look and feel to their shade structures.
Bringing Palm Thatch Beach Architecture into the 21st Century My family and I believed that there must be a better way. And that’s why we founded Palmas del Mundo. Our exclusive shade structure designs and high-tech palm thatch have finally brought beach architecture into the new millennium. And our custom design services and innovative materials allow upscale properties to continue their luxury brand aesthetic all the way to the water’s edge.
